Opioid Epidemic:
More people died from drug overdoses in 2015 than in any previous year on record, with the majority involving opioids. Since 1999, overdose deaths involving opioids—both prescription pain relievers and heroin—have nearly quadrupled. On average, 78 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose. Despite a fourfold increase in prescription opioid sales between 1999 and 2014, there has been no corresponding decrease in the amount of pain reported by Americans.

Adverse drug reactions cost an estimated $3.5 billion annually in extra medical expenses. Back pain alone affects 31 million Americans and costs employers an estimated $7.4 billion per year. It is the second leading cause of missed work in the United States, behind only the common cold.
